The herders have spent about 100 days with their local cattle on the alpine pastures of the Allgäu Mountains. In mid-September, the animals return to the valley during the Almabtrieb. At the Scheidplatz, the herds are brought together and then returned to their owners—which is where the term “Viehscheid” comes from.

The herd is traditionally led by a festively decorated “Kranzrind” (wreath cow), which wears an artfully woven wreath of flowers and twigs. However, this special headdress is only worn if the alpine summer has passed without any major mishaps and all the cattle in the herd are healthy and ready to make their way home to the valley.
